Are Beef Sticks Healthy?

Beef sticks are created from dehydrated, flavored meat, so they typically have few carbs and much protein. When that can be said about a snack, it's easy to believe it's good for you. In theory, yes. The answer depends on how it was made, what ingredients are used, and who is asking. A closer look is warranted.

The Nutritional Content of a Beef Stick

Let's take a look at beef sticks as a whole. You might notice that they have many of the same nutritional properties as regular beef, with a few distinctions. The primary ingredient in beef sticks is, of course, beef. Consequently, jerky products made with beef from grass-fed cattle usually have the most nutritional content, while jerky from commercially raised livestock has the least. Here's a nutritional analysis of what you get from eating a beef stick and why it might be a healthier option than some other foods.

Protein

Meat sticks are an excellent source of protein.

According to the USDA, the average beef stick contains 6.1 grams of protein per 1 oz. serving, which is about 13% of the total recommended dietary allowance for women, and just under 11% for men.

Protein provides various benefits, such as:

  1. Keeping you filled for a longer period of time

  2. Increasing muscle mass

  3. Building to bone density

  4. Reducing cravings

  5. Boosting metabolism

Protein that comes from grass-fed beef is more readily absorbed by the body than protein that comes from livestock raised on feed.

Vitamins and Minerals

Beef jerky is rich in vitamins and minerals that are essential for a healthy body. The most notable minerals found in beef jerky are zinc, iron, and sodium. Zinc helps improve acne, shorten colds, and can reduce blood sugar levels, which is important for people with diabetes. Iron helps to maintain healthy cells, skin, hair, and nails, as well as increases the production of red blood cells, which helps to keep your energy levels up. Sodium helps to rebuild electrolytes in the body after intense activities, but too much sodium can have negative effects on blood pressure. Beef sticks also contain trace levels of vitamins A, B, C, and calcium.

Fats

Despite the benefits of fat in our diet, adults should consume it in moderation. Some beef sticks can have up to 16 grams of fat per ounce, which is almost the total recommended daily allowance. So, care should be taken when selecting a beef snack.
